Haughey survives party putsch

NZPA-Reuter Dublin The former Irish Prime Minister. Charles Haughey. reinforced his reputation as a master of political survival yesterday by beating back a determined bid to oust him as Opposition Leader. A motion calling for his immediate resignation over a bugging and wiretapping scandal while he was in office was defeated 40 votes to 33 at a marathon session of his Fianna Fail Parliamentary party.

It had been widely expected that the motion would be carried after 41 deputies, a clear majority, signed a petition last week demanding a special party meeting to discuss the leadership question.

But Mr Haughey came through yet again to defeat the third challenge to his leadership in a year.

But most commentators predicted a rocky period ahead for the party, founded nearly 60 years ago. in view of the large number of votes against Mr Haughey. In the last challenge to his leadership. in October. 22 members voted against him. Mr Haughey hinted earlier in a radio interview that there would be a purge of dissidents in the party and party sources said that a meeting would be held today to discuss membership.
