Campaign cripples Eskimos

NZPA London A world-wide campaign against the killing of baby seals has been disastrous for Eskimos who depend on sealhunting for their livelihood, the Greenland Premier told reporters yesterday. A delegation of Greenland Eskimos is touring Europe to explain their plight. The Premier. Mr Jonathan Motzfeldt. said that the tiny communities which relied on the sale of seal skins to buy essential supplies had been crippled by the drop in prices, due to opposition to seal-hunting. “We know that many in Europe find it wrong to kill baby seals, but in Greenland we do not hunt baby seals, and our catches do not. and never did. pose a threat to stocks," he said. Greenpeace, the conservationist group which leads a campaign against the annual mass slaughter of seals, said yesterday that it was not opposed to the Eskimos' tradional hunting of mature animals.

“They hunt for food and to maintain subsistence levels. They use every bit of the animal; their meat and skins. It is wasteful killing which we object to." a spokesman said.
