Inquiry calls on Sharon to quit
NZPA-Reuter Jerusalem The Israeli inquiry into the Beirut massacre of Palestinians has recommended that the Defence Minister, Mr Ariel Sharon, resign, and strongly criticised several other military leaders. The findings of the fourmonth judicial investigation, published last evening, (New Zealand time) did not level serious blame at the Prime Minister, Mr Begin. The three-man commission was appointed to probe Israel’s part in the massacre of hundreds of Palestinian civilians by Lebanese Christian militiamen in Beirut's Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in September last year.
The Falangist militiamen were sent into the camps by Israeli forces with the de-
dared aim of rooting out Palestinian guerrillas. Mr Sharon, principal architect of Israel's invasion of Lebanon last year, told the commission that he had authorised the action. The hard-line Defence Minister told the inquiry that nobody in the entire defence establishment could have foreseen the tragedy that followed. But this was challenged by other witnesses who said that there were fears the Falangist militiamen might run amuck. The panel had also recommended the dismissal of the head of Military Intelligence, Major-General Yehoshua Saguy, the State radio said. To page 8
