Colossus Bay should gain win

Special Correspondent Wellington

Colossus Bay, second to Lady Wainui on Monday, appears best placed of the 11 runners in tonight's Keith Haub Pace, first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Manawatu Trotting Club's summer meeting. Colossus Bay paced a good race to take second berth on the first night. He enjoyed the run of the race behind the winner and tried hard to peg her back, but to no avail. With Lady Wainui out of the way and’also the scratching of Berry Scott, which was placed third behind this duo on Monday, the way is clear for Colossus Bay and Peter Wolfenden to notch a deserved success.

Gaine's Pride and Andy Robb were fourth and fifth respectively behind Lady Wainui, they were, however, some five lengths away from the third horse.

Of the two it was Andy Robb which impressed most. Last season, he raced four times without finishing in the money. His effort on Monday was useful as an early mistake added to a slow start, and he made ground well from the rear for fifth. Gunner Bee broke at the start on the first night and made some ground into sixth. He would need only to start on terms with the field to make a claim for some of the money. Of the others, the first night winner Coronado must rate strongly. He won impressively in a lower grade on Monday and should not find the rise in class too tough. The Hastings trainer, Robert MacDonald, holds a strong claim to winning the second leg of the double, the Reg Clapp Pace. MacDonald has the form runners Winning Streak and Cooler engaged and both look winning chances.

Winning Streak, a former southerner, as is Cooler, was most impressive when winning a Cl on Monday. Robert Cameron drove him to win and later combined with Cooler, when he ran third to Coronado and Scottish Division in the second leg. Cameron was not confirmed for either horse yesterday.

Scottish Division was a game second after racing without cover on the first night and a win would not surprise. Jim Smale drives the horse again. Full Power, a winner over the two days of the Hawke’s Bay meeting last month, and a good fourth to Loyal Byrd on the first night, appeals as one for longer odds in the Reon Murtha Pace, the first leg of the treble. Full Power is a local runner and could add to the good record of the Palmerston North horses for the first night. Adios Evander, second in the last race onMonday, and Raymond Light, impressive in a lower grade on the first night, appeal most of the others.

The consistent Morrinsville trotter My Grey should atone for his defeat on Monday when he lines up in the second leg. Niki Hanover and Captain Carthew look the dangers. Able Tradesman. Ingenuity and Buffy Baker make up a likely trio for the last leg, the Peter Kelly Pace.

Six commentators will be calling races at Palmerston tonight. They are Peter Kelly, Keith Haub. Reon Murtha. Reg Clapp, Alan Bright and Mike O'Sullivan.
