Bad erosion in N.Z. ‘may get worse’
PA Dunedin t New Zealand is experiencing a,.period of bad erosion which man should not accelerate, according to a Ministry of Works and Development engineer, at the Pacific Science Congress in Dunedin. Mr P. G. Grant said erosion could not be stopped in many places, particularly the mountains. However, man could ensure it was kept to a minimum by protecting vegetation, controlling animals. and preventing fires.
Allowing motor-cycles to be ridden on sand dunes may accelerate, erosion in coastal areas, Mr Grant said. The erosion started about 30 years ago and was caused by a natural increase in the frequency of big rain stornhs. It could get worse and continue into the next century, Mr Grant said. Erosion was occurring around New Zealand but it was probably more marked in the North Island because of its greater number of rain storms, he said.
