Drunken drivers
Sir.—This wretched situation where the Accident Compensation Commission pays out to a drunken driver injured through his own drunkenness should be stopped immediately. Like D. Lewis I remain unconvinced that the reasons for random breath-testing are genuine when such a glaring anomaly can exist in the law. Who makes such laws which enable a criminal to be paid for injuries suffered while burgling someone’s home or a drunk to be paid for drunken driving? There seems to be a school of thought in the Government which tries to solve a problem by adding a new law instead of quashing an old one. New Zealand is over-legislated. So let us first look at retracting old legislation such as the disastrous Accident Compensation Commission before we even consider introducing other bad laws such as random breath-testing. — Yours, etc.. C. QUINN. February 6, 1983.
