Dogs on beaches

Sir,—l am a dog owner and am making every endeavour to see that my dog does nothing offensive on the beach. When we go for a walk I carry an old plastic ice-cream container, and I have trained my dog to bark once for wee wees and twice for the other. My efforts, however, are in vain. The seagulls continue to do their business from a great height, and I have experienced several near misses. But horror of horrors, a horse and buggy trotted past me recently, and without even stopping, the animal relieved himself with gay abandon, fouling the beach over a distance of about 15 metres. As they passed, the driver raised his whip and called out, “Goodday.” Good day indeed. I feel absolutely despondent, so does my dog. In a fit of frustration he has destroyed his potty and returned to his previous filthy habits. — Yours, etc., FRANK ATKINS. February 7, 1983.
