Chathams travel
Sir,—The passenger service to and from the Chatham Islands is insufficient. For two months, almost all flights have been fully booked. Many people who have wanted to travel have been prevented. There is no other means of travel. Businessmen have been unable to visit and the islands have lost business opportunities. Residents have been unable to holiday or attend social and family events, such as weddings or funerals, on the mainland. Secondary school children often leave home weeks before the school term begins or arrive at boarding school after term has commenced. The new Argosy aircraft has made travel more enjoyable, but that is little consolation when seats, although costing over $2OO each way, are not available. The sense of isolation on the Chatham Islands has been increased by the Argosy service. — Yours, etc., • FRANK SAXTON, Chatham Islands. January 24. 1983.
