Duck’s debut in N.Z.

PA Nelson A species of duck new to New Zealand, the chestnutbreasted shelduck, has been found in Nelson and Canterbury. Mrs Jenny Hawkins, the Nelson representative of the Ornithological Society, said that two of the duck’s were seen on a farm near Farewell Spit, and another two were seen about the same time at Lake Ellesmere. The chestnut-breasted shelduck, sometimes called the mountain duck, is an Australian equivalent of the paradise duck. The Australian ducks, which were seen among a flock of paradise ducks, are common in south-eastern Australia and presumably were carried across the Tasman Sea by strong westerly winds, said Mrs Hawkins.

The shelduck is the same size and colouring as a paradise duck, except for a broad, pale chestnut band round the breast and back of

the neck. The female has a white ring around the eye instead of the white head of the paradise female.
