M.P.s to spend a day at Chch prisons
Parliamentary reporter Six Government members of Parliament will spend a day looking round the four Christchurch prisons on Thursday. They are members of the caucus Committee on Justice, which is studying the comprehensive report on review of New Zealand’s penal policies completed at the beginning of last year. Their visit was not associated in any way with the recent suicide attempt at Christchurch Women’s Prison, a spokesman for the committee said.
The group had last year visited Auckland prisons, and would go on to see Invercargill institutions the next day. The. M.P.s will arrive at Paparua Prison about 10.45 a.m. and have lunch there. They will go on to the women's prison and the Rolleston and Addington prisons. They will be Messrs J. Banks (Whangarei), P. R. Burdon (Fendalton). M. E. Cox (Manawatu), P. C. East (Rotorua). T. de V Hunt (Pakuranga) and D. M. Jones (Helensvilie), the chairman of the committee.
