Lendl's frustration prompted a display of bad temper in the opening set. He threw down his racket after losing the first three games and minutes later slammed his racket into the net after missing an easy volley. The match was delayed while the net was repaired. The Czechoslovak finally regained his composure and reeled off the last four games of the set. He then dominated the second sets.
