Man fined for indecent photo trade
PA Auckland A television sound technician who ran a mail order business selling indecent photographs has been fined $250 when he appeared in the District Court at Auckland. John Dylan, aged 37, of Forrest Hill, denied a charge of possessing for sale 140 indecent colour photographs and 36 indecent colour slides,
and two charges of selling an indecent colour print and eight indecent colour slides. Judge Gilbert convicted and fined Dylan $250, with $2O costs, on the first charge, and on the other two charges, he was convicted and discharged. Sergeant Timothy Hughes told the court that police had made inquiries at an inner city premises where Dylan ran his mail order business
selling pictures of nude women. They found 140 indecent prints and 36 indecent colour slides as well as a large amount of correspondence responding to advertisements, and a cash book with receipts for sales of $2102.55. Dylan told police he started the business last Sep-
tember and it was not intended that the pictures be available to anyone who might be offended by them, Mr Hughes said. Counsel for Dylan, Mr John Clearwater, said his client had used publications available to the public, such as “Penthouse” magazine, as a guide. Dylan felt that the material he was handling would not be considered indecent.
