C.D. batsmen break record

PA Hamilton A Shell Trophy record eighth wicket partnership of 173 by lan Smith and Gary Robertson lifted Central Districts into a good position after two days play in their cricket match against Northern Districts at Hamilton. The two made their massive contribution in Central Districts' first innings of 392. to which Northern Districts replied with exactly 100 less. At the close of play yesterday. Central were 47 for the loss of Roger Pierce (31) in the second innings, holding an over-all lead of 147.

Smith's third century in his last four Shell Trophy innings contained many flowing drives and neatly executed cuts and sweeps. His 50 came from 65 balls, his 100 from 116 balls and his 143 from 161 balls. He hit 19 fours. Robertson batted with exceptional skill for a No. 9 batsman and his cover driv-

ing. particularly, was of high class. His 50 came up in as many balls and his 96. with 14 fours. occupied 88 minutes, the time of the 173run partnership which ran the Northern Districts bowlers ragged. The big difference in the Northern Districts innings, compared with Central Districts, was that while a number of batsmen started well none of them went on to a big score. Mike Wright, Roger Broughton and John Parker all reached the 30s in good style before Andrew Roberts (65) took toll of the attack. Robertson bowled steadily and David Stirling improved his figures to two for 63 by dismissing White and Steve Scott in one over late in the innings. O’Sullivan's three victims were the top. order batsmen Wright, Broughton and Parker.
