Immers retains life-saving title

By

RAY CAIRNS

There has never quite been a tube rescue final to match that in which Carl Immers (Taylors Mistake) retained his Canterbury title in the Lemon and Paeroa championship carnival at Waimairi yesterday. With his now-established partner, John Dimick, Immers came through to the finish line on the same waves as the three New Brighton pairings: Nigel Ward; (with Lachie Marshall), John Koens (with Richard Clark), and Stephen Ward (with John Davie). Of those, Koens posed the biggest initial danger, just as he has been a nemesis of Immers in the past. But Koens, a narrow leader, stood up to drag Clarke a little too early, and had to revert to using the wade. Then it was the younger Ward, Nigel, who appeared to have the winning of the race, but the experienced and well-performed Immers made a final thrust which took him to the line first with nothing more than a metre separating the first four teams.

No other finish on the day matched that, though the first two placings in both other grades were keenly sought. Martin Beks (South Brighton) also retained his junior title, only this time with Ivan Srzich as his partner, a whisker clear of Gary Connor (towing his younger brother, Evan), though they were to be disqualified. Lynette Griffiths (New Brighton) also retained her women’s title, and with a different patient: Andrea McKendry instead of Jenny Carpinter. They too were -pushed desperately close by the Taylors Mistake pair of Teresa Stanley and Carolyn Pearce. There was considerable joy for the various North Beach craft crews, though once again they just failed to complete a doubledouble of “rescue” championships. The senior and junior crews won the canoe rescue titles without many problems, and so did the junior boat crew. But the well-performed senior A boat crew, which now has the boat race series sewn up, probably ahead of its B crew, could not add the boat rescue. Instead, it was Waikuku Beach which came through on a wave to snatch the title from a desper-ately-stroking North Beach crew.

The topsy-turvy nature of the taplin relay races continued, with Waimairi, twice the winner of the open races, losing the one that mattered, the championship, behind not only to Taylors Mistake but also to Waikuku Beach. And a mighty first-off board leg from Laurence Aislabie paved the way to Waimairi’s comfortable win of the junior taplin. Once again, Taylors Mistake and South Brighton dominated a busy day of rescue and resuscitation, the former club pulling through in the six-man events with its drilling. In the senior six, Taylors Mistake had to bow to an impressive patient swim from the formidable Bryce Ward, but still retained its title in some comfort'

Similarly, Martin Beks made a sterling start for South Brighton in the junior six. but lan MacDonald pulled back much of the deficit and Taylors Mistake then won convincingly on the beach. There were similar results in the male four-man championships, but the South Brighton women did their club proud, again polling brilliantly in the four-place, though a shade behind an outstanding Taylors Mistake senior four.

A mighty board paddle from Geoff Walker (Waimairi) brought him and Michael Mead a resounding victory in the board relay, re-run from the previous carnival. Walker gave the' Canterbury champion, Laurie McKeown (Taylors Mistake), a start of around 36m and beat him by 20m. But he and Eric Leask could not foot it with Simon Davis and Darryl Neate (Taylors Mistake) in the ski relay, though Taylors Mistake missed a double when Sumner’s Brent Todd and Wayne Parker took out the junior title.
