Ponti appeals in Northland Cup

Special correspondent Auckland Ponti, with victory snatched off him in the final few strides at Alexandra Park last time out, has a fine chance of settling his account in the Northland Cup at the Northland Trotting Club’s meeting at Ruakaka today. The plucky little Papa-kura-trained entire will be ideally suited by the 2700 m event, the first leg of the Northland Trotting Club's T.A.B. double. Ponti had to be content with second in the Pukekohe Cup on January 20, when King Amber rattled home to win by a short neck in the final few strides. He had been a good fourth there six nights earlier. His main opposition should come from Battleship, Sleepy Baker, * Long Range and Scotch Trick. Sleepy Baker was left little racing room in the run home at Claudelands on January 21 and fourth was his lot. But had he been given a clear run things would have been different. Scotch Trick did not measure up in his latest effort at Alexandra Park on January 20 and in his previous race had suffered a fair check which put paid to his chances. Abbe Schell has every opportunity of repeating his winning effort at New Plymouth on January 15 when he lines up in the Goodyear Pace, the second leg of the double. He is handily drawn and if he gets to the front will be hard to head off.
