Our Mana should win at Nelson today

From G. K. Yule Nelson Our Mana will need only to receive a slightly more favourable run than he did in the Benson and Hedges Nelson Cup on Saturday to come out on top quite decisively today. He has drawn No. 4 at the barrier in the Dominion Breweries Handicap, first leg of the Nelson Trotting Club's T.A.B. double, a race to be run over 2400 m. Our Mana was one of six or eight horses to be buffeted about on several occasions in an easily forgettable race which developed into a contest of almost comic opera proportions.

He broke and lost a good 60m at the start and received three bad checks, which must have doubled the ground he gave away. He put in a tremendous run in the home straight and was less than three lengths from the winner. Hamish, at the line.

Hamish received a splendid run three back on the rails, just behind Lord Thorpe, and he had no trouble working clear to challenge. He was inclined to run in on top of Lord Thorpe, but the film of the incident showed that the two horses did not come together and an inquiry was quickly dealt with.

Other inquiries into incidents which split the field badly took until after the last event. The only person found blameworthy in any incident was Jack Smolensk!, the driver of Harvey's Sister, the surprise favourite for the race. He was fined $l5O for the manner in which he eased the pace, causing interference to a number of horses.

Chataway and Templar were two of the worst sufferers in several instances of interference and they were not disgraced when sixth and fourth respectively. They could be the ones to trouble Our Mana.

Lord Thorpe must be considered again. His placing on Saturday came at his first start since early in November and the run should improve him. Lady Luca will appreciate the shorter distance. She was challenging wide out with about 200 m left in Saturday's race and had just hit the front when, according to her driver, Royce Cleat “she put in a long one.” and crashed to the ground. Lyndon Robert advanced in favour for the $60,000 New Zealand Derby at Addington Raceway, on February 16 when he held Dunhill out by half a length in the Cable Price Toyota Classic on Saturday. Lyndon Robert got off balance near a crossing at the 1400 m and broke. However, he recovered quickly and lost only three or four lengths. The incident left Dunhill in front, with Lyndon Robert racing up quickly to join him some distance from the end.

Lyndon Robert had a slender advantage 200 m out and maintained it at half a length at the line. He paced the 2200 m in 2min 53.65, a track record, being inside Regal Guy’s 2min 54.3 set three years earlier. “He needs racing and I think I’ll start him again on Monday." said Lyndon Robert's trainer. Dunhill blew up after the race and he too will contest the Tenderkist Handicap today, both horses starting from 30m. Both will find it difficult to give such a start to Nardin’s Castle, so impressive on Saturday when making his race debut. He flashed home from far back failing by a nose to catch Nardin Lustre, which created a track record of 2min 11.3 s for the 2400 m. Nardin's Castle will have only to begin slightly better than when he started from the second line on Saturday to give his rivals a shake.
