Uncertain future for the Waitaki
No-one knows how long the general cargo shop Waitaki will be laid up at the breastwork at Lyttelton. The 3166-ton Waitaki has now been lying idle at the breastwork for about two weeks, after coming out of dry dock. ‘‘We have not been advised of any cargo for her,” said a spokesman for Union Maritime Services. Her new owner, the Union Steam Ship Company, is making the most of her lay-up. Workers are doing general ship maintenance and giving her a spruce-up. In spite of the depressed state of New Zealand’s shipping industry, the Waitaki is the only vessel to have been laid up at Lyttelton. Most of the other laid-up vessels are berthed at North Island ports. The Waitaki arrived at port earlier this month on her last Tasman container run for the now-defunct Maritime Carriers. Union Company executives have said she may be put on a Tasman run carrying bulk cargo, but no-one knows for sure. ARRIVALS Saturday Nil. Sunday Nedlloyd Frazer (1.46 p.m.) 8155, Bluff (Guthrey).
