Avonside out of running?
Avonside virtually dropped out of the race for’ the senior women's tennis championship when it lost to the competition leader. United. 0-6, on Saturday. Shirley remains the only team within reasonable striking distance of United. It assisted its chances on Saturday with a healthy 5-1 win against Elm-
wood. The expected battle between Shirley Haig (United) and Judith Phillips (Avonside) eventuated in the first set, Haig winning in a tie-breaker. But in the second set Phillips lost the control she had over her game earlier and Haig was quick to take the advantage. Avonside could salvage only
two sets from the entire match against United. Fendalton, which had not had a happy season up to Saturday capitalised on the absence of Barrington's top player. Robyn Hunt, to take a morale boosting 5-1 win. Only Vicky Ratana, with a steady performance against Angela Brading. prevented a clean sweep against her side. The win boosted Fendalton one place ahead of Barrington on the points table. Shirley's win against bottom placed Elmwood was convincing. Carolyn Oakley and Robyn Wilson with a doubles win against Julianne Taylor and Leigh Johnson salvaged some pride for Elmwood. Points are: United 22. Shirley 19, Avonside 14. Fendalton 6. Barrington. 6, Elmwood 3. Results: United 6, Avonside 0
