Johnson, Hoskin win title
Nigel Johnson and Peter Hoskin retained their perfect record when the final two heats of the Canterbury R class yachting championship were sailed at Lyttelton on Saturday. They had also gained line honours in both races when the series began the preyious week-end.
However, they did not have matters all their own way, particularly in the fourth heat. Johnson and Hoskin had trailed lan Douglas and Tony Park round the course before slipping ahead as the wind freshened just before the finish. It had been smoother sail-
ing for Johnson and Hoskin earlier in the day as they led throughout-the third heat to win by about 2min 30s from Mark and Steve Macintosh, with Douglas and Park third. The May brothers, Keith and Ross, extended a successful record this summer by winning the Canterbury Javelin class championship. Their prospects were not bright in the third heat until they advanced strongly on the last triangle to beat Ricky Chapman and Shaun Fitzgerald by almost 2min. Paul Macintosh and Brent Cowan finished third, in front of the early leaders, Neal Buckley and Hugh Gallagher.
