Canterbury well beaten—again
PA Invercargill The once-proud cricketing province of Canterbury was humiliated for the second time in a week by Otago when the three-da’y Shell Trophy match ended in two days in Invercargill on Saturday. It took two sessions and nine minutes for Canterbury to be dismissed twice by the Otago bowling attack. In the previous match, it was the Otago pacemen who mauled the Canterbury batting but it was the turn of the spinners on Saturday, and they fully exploited some apparently woeful technical deficiencies among the Canterbury batsmen to guide Otago to a victory by an innings and 87 runs.’ Otago’s 282 runs on the first day showed the pitch not to be at fault, provided batsmen played with application. The Otago spinners, Stephen Boock and Kassem
Ibadulla. with some first innings assistance from Carl Dickel, fed off Canterbury batting deficiencies like vultures over free offerings of Canterbury lamb. Five Canterbury batsmen failed to score in the first innings and three in the second innings. It was a particularly satisfying game for Ibadulla who had bowled only 12 overs without reward in his onlyother first class match earlier this year against Central Districts.
