Salvador rebels claim to have blown key bridge
NZPA-Reuter San Salvador Fierce fighting was reported from El Salvador’s northern province of Morazan yesterday and Left-wing guerrillas said that they had cut off half the area by blowing up a key bridge. As more than 5000 of the United States-backed Army’s best troops started pushing towards guerrilla strongholds
in the north of Morazan, the guerrilla’s radio station, Venceremos, said that a group of commandos had slipped past Army guards and blown up the bridge over the Torola River, which divides the province. Virtually all supplies for the troops taking part in one of the biggest counter-offen-sives in the three-year war
; have to go on the road over the Torola. Venceremos announced i that the guerrillas would cause more havoc to Army supply lines by crippling road traffic throughout El ' Salvador as from yesterday. - It said that all vehicles mov- ■ ing on the road would be ' -considered targets.
