drugs charge A man has been remanded in the Melbourne Magistrates Court in connection with the seizure of 330 kg of cannabis resin at Tullamarinc airport. Peter James Kelly, aged 31. of no fixed address, was charged with possessing a prohibited import — cannabis resin. A magistrate, John Dugan, remanded Kelly to appear again on January 27. Bail was refugsed. No pleas were entered. — Melbourne. Flood hits IM A million people have been seriously affected by flooding in the worst natural disaster in Ecuador’s history. A third of the country has been hit by torrential rains for two months. At least 20 people have died in mudslides. — Quito. Job scheme The Swiss Government has bowed to growing public concern about unemployment by agreeing to set up a job creation scheme — despite the fact that the jobless total is the lowest in the Western world. The Government said that it' would announce details of the programme, called for by trade unions and Socialist ■ politicians, at the end of January. Swiss unemployment nearly doubled last year to reach 23,579 at the end of December, or 0.8 per cent of the workforce. — Berne. Fragile octopus Two fragile octopuses found off the California coast could be the only ones of their kind on display in the world, a scientist, said. Two squid boats caught three Paper Nautilus octopuses near Santa Catalina Island, but one has since died. — Los Angeles. Policemen on bail Two British policemen have been granted bail by a London Court after they were accused of shooting an innocent man in a police ambush. Detective Constable John Jardine faced a charge of attempting to murder Stephen Waldorf. Detective Constable Peter Finch is charged with attempted wounding. — London. Advert for priests The Catholic Church in Toronto, Canada, „. has launched a dramatic advertising campaign to recruit more priests with a poster showing a cricified Christ against a backdrop of the city’s skyscrapers. The poster has the slogan "Dare to be a priest like me”. emblazoned across the top of the crucifix. — Toronto.
