Patrol car ploy

PA Auckland Redundant Auckland City traffic patrol cars are being used as “scarecrows” to deter motorists from speeding where council workmen are repairing roads. For several weeks, unmanned patrol cars have been stationed on roads under repair to slow motorists. Speeding drivers often damage newly sealed surfaces. The two cars being used still bear the traffic department markings and disconnected lights. The “scarecrows” were

proposed by the city works engineer, Mr J. H. Poland, who borrowed the idea from a similar tactic in the United States. Mr Poland said yesterday that the system had been successful. The council’s traffic superintendent, Mr J. J. Nielsen, warned motorists against becoming complacent about the unmanned patrol cars on their regular route. Motorists speeding through roads under repair might be caught along the road by a manned traffic car, he said.
