Phones back today
Most subscribers in the Halswell-Upper Riccarton area should have their telephones working again by this morning, after Post Office linemen worked from dawn to dusk yesterday. The original estimate of subscribers who lost the use of their telephones after Wednesday evening’s storm was 100, but that was boosted after rhatiy more reports came in yesterday, said the senior divisional engineer for Post Office works and services, Mr W. B. Ten
Kley. “Some people did not bother reporting last night,” said Mr Ten Kley yesterday, “They told us when they come in to work.” The linemen were repairing the damage as the reports came in, and they expected to clear all the lines yesterday. Most of the damage to telephone'lines was caused by trees and other objects pulling them down or hanging on them and causing short-circuits.
