Hay barn, 25,000 bales, destroyed
A hay barn and 25.000 bales of hay were destroyed by fire near Motukarara yesterday.
The fire was reported at 9.30 a.m. Although it was under control by 1.30 p.m., firemen did not leave the scene until about 5 p.m. Fire engines and tankers from Lincoln, Rolleston, and Burnham attended the blaze, on the Akaroa-Christchurch highway about I.skm past Motukarara. An engine from Rolleston was put on standby at the Lincoln station.
Bulldozers and front-end loaders from neighbouring farms were used to spread the hay so that firemen could soak it thoroughly; Water was carted from the Halswell River, almost Ikm away.
The police have been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
