Thriller Dee has fine chance at Waikato

Special correspondent Auckland Thriller Dee looks to have a fine opportunity of winning the main trot at'the Waikato Trotting Club's meeting at Claudelands tonight if the ease in which she despatched her rivals in her previous race is any indication. The Ohaupo-trained mare left her opposition in her wake in the McMillan Flying Mile at Cambridge on January 7 and in doing so she became the largest stakesearning trotting mare raced solely in New Zealand. Her earnings, just short of $lOO,OOO. surpassed the record of $94,007.50 held by Framalda, which retired in 1981. Thriller Dee has had 20 wins and 24 placings from 63 starts. She will again be driven by Peter Wolfenden in the Fairview Motors Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double, run over 2900 m. this evening. Thriller Dee will share the back mark of 10m with the “giant” mare, Via Volare, which can be counted on to make a race of it. Thriller Dee’s victory at Cambridge, albeit an easy one, resulted from a piece of skilful driving by Wolfenden. He had her perfectly positioned in the trail behind the pacemaker, Via Volare, and with Cal Brydon breaking while pressuring for the lead early on, Thriller Dee had no trouble in gathering in the

leader at the 300 m. She scorched away to win by three and a half lengths. Mister Square will almost certainly take early control from his draw, and if allowed to dictate events could be hard to beat. Others worth considering are Alison Command, War Talent and Polly Lobell. The second ’leg of the double the Brownson Jewellers Pace, should provide a stirring finish with On Your Mark and Smooth Heir, adversaries at Alexandra Park last Friday, well drawn. Smooth Heir, which finished second and On Your Mark (third) were toppled by Poplar Country in a blanket finish to the Piha Free-for-all. On Your Mark, in his first

run after a short spell, should be all the better for that run' and over this evening's 1700 m will be hard to beat. Wynna Nandina. Lady Laz and View Field appeal as the likely T.A.B. treble combination.
