Laser mapping system in use
Australia is producing commercially a mapping system which could greatly improve the charting of coastal waters. The laser airborne depth sounder (LADS) was developed at the Defence Research Centre at Adelaide. Thorn EMI Electronics, of Australia, is manufacturing the system for the Royal- Australian Navy before looking to international markets. It once took many months to cover a few hundred kilometres of coastal waters throwing a lead-weighted" line overboard to measure depths. Even using a ship-borne echo sounder took weeks to map a comparable area. LADS can do the job in a few days, more quickly and with greater accuracy 'than other hydrographic systems, says Thorn. The system is based on measuring the time interval between two laser beam pulses, one of which is reflected from the surface of the sea while the other is reflected from the sea bottom. Separate receivers in an aircraft detect both reflections and the sea depth calculation is based on the time difference the two laser beams are received. On survey missions, aircraft carrying the survey gear will fly straight tracks at a speed of 70m per second and at an altitude of 500 m. Thorn says it is generally possible to make depth measurements between about 2m and 30m. ARRIVALS Forum New Zealand (6 a.m.) 6266, Brisbane (S.C.N.Z.). Altis (7 a.m.) 10,996, Napier (Scales).
