Bomb scare man charged

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo The Japanese police yesterday charged a Canadian under anti-hijack laws after a Korean Airlines jumbo jet with 236 people on board made an emergency landing at Tokyo because of a bomb scare.

The Boeing 747 landed at Narita Airport on Saturday morning' after the K.A.L. office in Toronto, Canada, received a mailed warning that a bomb had been planted aboard the. plane, on a flight from New York to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska. The. police .said that Kwok Wing Ming, aged 31, born in Hong Kong but now a Canadian citizen, had told investigators that he sent a letter containing the warning to the K.A.L. office, although he talked incoherently about a man chasing him. They said that Kwok had been charged with obstructing the flight of the airliner. More than 2000 riot police and dozens of fire engines surrounded the aircraft after it landed. Police bomb experts searched it after the passengers. and crew had scrambled to safety but no explosives were found. The plane later flew on to Seoul and landed safely.
