Joint chess winners
PA Dunedin Two Aucklanders. David Gollogly and Paul Garbett, shared the New Zealand chess championship title in Dunedin yesterday, both winning their matches in the tenth and final round to score BV Z points each. They pipped an Otago player, Richard Sutton, the leader from the sixth round, who lost his last match and finished with eight points. Mark Levene. who had also been prominent in the 12-man competition, finished fourth with 7 points.
Garbett also won the championship in 1974 and 1975. Last year’s premier reserve championship joint winner. Gollogly was making his first attempt for the New Zealand title. As the 1983 title-holders they will share the Silver Rook Trophy and $lOOO prizemoney. The 1983 premier reserve chess championship was won by Anthony Ker (Wellington) and Ben Alexander (Canterbury), with B*4 points each. Third equal were David Weegenaar (Otago) and Peter Cribbett (Canterbury).
