Ryan easily wins cash cycling title

Colin Ryan easily won both New Zealand senior grass track professional cycling titles at Tinwald yesterday, but the junior and cadets' championships were far more keenly contested.

In a surprise placing to many spectators, Tony Ward was adjudged to have retained his junior 1600 m championship on his home track, from the Dunedin rider. Geoff Keogh. Craig Connell. of Pukekohe. had to chase hard to pip Lisle Wilson, another Ashburton rider, in the cadet 1600 m. after the latter had slipped clear with a lap to ride.

The championships were held in hot conditions on a fast track, and the speed of New Zealand’s best grass track perhaps contributed to the numerous crashes. Clayton Yaxley suffering the most, but he was still able to shrug off his burns and contest the later races.

Ryan, of Timaru, was never really challenged in the senior events. Yaxley and Steve Doherty sharing the runner-up placings, while Steve Ryan was third in both cases.

However, all of them had to bow to Owen Wylie in the Goodyear wheel-race, over 2400 m. leading home Jeff Ward and Rvan.

The 15-year-old Connell concluded a productive week's racing in South Canterbury by not only taking the cadet title, to go with his South Island hard track win a week earlier, but also winning the wheel-race and the 800 m.

He will be back in the South Island in seven weeks seeking to add the hard track championships to those he has has already won. Results:Championships Senior. —1600 m: C. Ryan 1. S. Dohertv 2. S.
