Lamb campaign helps sales
New Zealand lamb.enjoyed almost unprecedented demand in Britain last week in the wake of a "January bonanza" promotion campaign. the New Zealand Meat Producers Board said in its weekly market report. Almost every retail outlet in the country is taking part in the board's campaign, backed by national advertising. However, prices had shown little movement on wholesale markets. On Smithfield. PL and PM grade lamb was quoted at 51p to 52p a lb. Prices for domestic lean
beef tumbled in the United States, putting pressure on imported manufacturing beef. But considering the influx of bonded New Zealand and Australian beef onto the market so far this year, the over-all result was satisfactory. New Zealand cowbeef averaged U594.5c a lb c.i.f. and bull averaged 100.5 c a lb. ' The holiday period has resulted in few inquiries for New Zealand mutton in Japan, the board said. Australia was going through a similar quiet period.
