Road race to Shatford

Ivan Shatford. a former Te Kura Club runner from Christchurch. who has been in Perth for about a year, won the Ashburton 10km road race on Saturday Shatford. who was prominent in Canterbury on the track, road, and cross-country, returned to Australia yesterday after having spent three weeks holidaying in Christchurch. He said that he had not raced this season and was not expecting to run well, but he showed with his win against a field of nearly 200 that he has lost none of his zest.

Shatford was in a leading group of three for the first of three laps around the Ashburton Domain and when Gavin Donaldson (Christchurch) withdrew with a strained leg, Shatford drew away from the second-placed Kevin Barnes (Christchurch). The winning time was 31min 38sec, which was considered a slow time for the distance, though the weather was warm. Barnes, having his first official race for some time, recorded 31:50.

Third was Alistair Stopforth (University), in 32:11. with a St Marlins runner. Greg Clark, fourth in 32:31 and John Davies (Te Kura) fifth in 32:48. Denis O’Keefe (St Martins) was next and first veteran, just heading off the top over-50 runner. Eric Hunter (University).

Christine Burden (University) continued her domination of women's road running by coming

forty-fifth over all and finishing in a second over 36 minutes. Lynn Tipper (University) was second, while Marie Stokes (Q.E.) was first veteran woman. Mrs Burden led all the way to take the women’s title, averaging under six minutes a mile. She was followed home by Lynn Tipper, who seldom races on the road, preferring" the track and cross-country. Mary Warne, also from the powerful University club, was third all the way. while June Barnes (Christchurch) passed her club-mate, Katherine Ward, in the last Ikm to beat her by eight seconds.
