Speedway Records fall at Glen
Two more race records were broken at the Woodford Glen speedway on Saturday evening at a meeting which produced some of the best stock car racing of the season. Tony Caldwell, the South . Island saloon car champion and six-lap record holder, added the eight-lap race record to his credit when he cut more than four seconds off Doug Smiths previous time to record 2min 53.425. A sportsman driver, Mike Allan, the holder of the track lap record, took 1.5 s off his six-lap race figure with a time of 2:08.215. Allan’s record run came from his third race of the night when he had started behind his close rival, Joe Annan. Annan secured the lead at the half-way stage, but was caught by Allan on the next lap. Allan • demonstrated his car’s speed when he passed Annan on the back straight. The return of many stock cars which had been competing in Nelson brought some fiery, entertaining racing in that class. Bruce Annan had a successful night, winning three races and finishing second in another. Keith
Ferguson was disqualified in the last race after attempting Io gain an advantage on Terry Hern by racing on the infield. The third race resulted in four drivers, including Annan, round . the last corner all striving for the lead. In the dash for the line. Mike Preddy emerged as the winner. The "driver of the night" was awarded to the six to eight cylinder driver. Bob Burgess, in his PB Vauxhall. Burgess, in recording a win and two second placings, had to come from near the rear of the 12-car field on each occasion. The four-cylinder champion. John Townshend (Chevette 2.3). after finishing fourth in the South Island saloon car championships, was promoted to the super saloon class for the night. Townshend showed little . respect for the big VB-powered cars and promptly won the first race after starting from the pole position. He later recorded a third placing.
