Canterbury openers start fightback
PA Hamilton After being behind by 123 on the first innings. Canterbury fought back, strongly in its second to be 63 without loss at stumps on the second day of its Shell Trophy cricket match against Northern Districts at Hamilton. Northern Districts had to work hard for its total of 273 in reply to Canterbury's first innings 150. Northern Districts' innings, after it was resumed at the overnight score of 74 for one. featured 85 by the opener. Chris Kuggeleijn. 57 by the captain. John Parker, and 31 by Karl Treiber, who the previous day had been promoted from the tail end to act as nightwatchman. Canterbury's bowlers deserved much credit for restricting Northern Districts to 273 after the home team reached 159 with only one wicket down. Much of the attack was in the hands of the spinners. David Stead. Vaughan Brown and Richard Leggat. Brown was the most successful, his off-spinners earning him three for 31. The Canterbury openers. Peter Rattray and Bob Carter, provided the fastest sustained scoring of the match ' when they sent the second innings away at a brisk clip. The Northern Districts new ball attack made no impression. Treiber being removed from it after three overs and Mark Carrington after four. Rattray, in splendid touch, played numerous delightful strokes and was 33 when Canterbury's 50 came up in the twelfth over. At stumps he was 39 and looked full of runs.
