Whitebaiting and salmon fishing each year lure Bernie Soper, left, and Leo Todd to the Kairaki Camping Ground. Both Christchurch men maintain permanent caravan sites between neatly manicured hedges and flower borders which they maintain at week-ends and holidays. Mr Todd has been staying at Kairaki for 20 years and Mr Soper for 19, plenty of time to get to know the other regulars who fill half of the 180 sites available. The fishing this year has been hampered by a spell of north-westerly weather, but when the Waimakariri River runs dirty there is time for a chat, a spot to drink, and a game of darts.
