Settled summer in camp
Mrs Betty Edwards, of Christchurch, used to bringher children out to thr Kairaki Camping Ground.’ and now her daughter. Mrs Margaret Gardner, brings her family.
Here she sits inside the. caravan built by her hus--band. Mr Norman Edwards.nursing Kirsty Gardner, aged, one. the third generation family member to spend holidays at Kairaki. I Mr and Mrs Edwards first' pitched their tent at Kairakiin 1941. The fishing was good and it was. close to home. They took a permanent site and’progressed from canvas, to caravans. First a borrowed one. then a "tin shed; on wheels," and later that, built by Mr Edwards. From September to April the Edwards family stay at the camp in a site neatly? fringed by hedge. Mrs Edwards is a member of the social committee and helps
to organise housie, bathing beauty contests, baby shows.*' and fishing competitions. They have adopted a camp ' cat and have befriended a lot of regulars. The quiet Kairaki camp attracts manv families year after year. ’ -
"It is a jolly good camp." says Mrs Edwards. "It is peaceful and friendly." The family plans to return next year.
