Stranded yacht abandoned
PA Whangarei A Swedish couple have given up hope'of saving their 12m yacht stranded on a sandbar in Parengarenga Harbour and plan to fly home from Auckland this week, according to a friend.
The double-masted Frac 11 had been home for Robert and Alice Fabre for 10 years, sailing throughout the world.
It stuck on a sandbar entering the harbour on December 21 and attempts to drag it free have failed. It is badly holed. A French couple, Robert "Rochet and Ginette Henroid, were also aboard the yacht. Miss Henroid, the only one of the four who speaks English, said the stranding had been “a terrible disaster” for the Fabres.
The four have been staying with the policeman at Houhora, Constable Archie Clark, and his family.
