Icebreaker turns back
Generator trouble has forced the United States Coast Guard icebreaker Glacier to abandon her voyage to Antarctica and return to Lyttelton for repairs. The Glacier, which sailed from Lyttelton on Monday evening, is scheduled to ar-
rive back in port at 8.30 a.m. today. “She is coming back for technical assistance for one of her generators,” said Mr Trevor Grice, New Zealand affairs co-ordinator for the United States Antarctic Support Force in Christ-
church. He expected that the repairs would take up to three days. Technicians would have to fly from the United States to repair the failed generator, one of several used to supply the 8915-ton ship with power.
