“Times” fails to appear again

NZPA London The strike-hit “Times” of London failed to appear again yesterday, the day named by the management as the last to find a solution before all staff payments are stopped. The newspaper has lost seven issues since a wildcat strike by 92 electricians halted the 197 year old daily newspaper before it could print on the night of December 20.

The management said that it would stop payments to all the 2400 staff of “The Times” and weekly “Sunday Times,” if the dispute is not solved.

Talks between the company and the unions adjourned yesterday and the board will meet today to discuss the situation, said a company spokesman, Arthur Brittenden.

The electricians want more money for operating new computers and photographic equipment. The National Printers’ Union leader, Bill Keys, said that if the strike was prolonged, it could spread to other newspapers owned by “The Times” proprietor, Rupert Murdoch. Mr Brittenden said that Times Newspapers, Ltd, had no cash to spare after losing about £l3 million (SNZ2B.B million) this year, on top of a £ 15 million ($NZ33.3 million) loss in 1981.
