Finnish Govt may be saved, says P.M.

NZPA-Reuter Helsinki The Finnish Government was due to resign today, but the' Prime Minister, Mr Kalevi Sorsa, said that it could be reformed without its Communist and Socialist members. Mr Sorsa announced yesterday that his four-party coalition had collapsed after its 35 Communist and Socialist members voted against Government plans for increased defence spending. He said that he was disappointed that his Government would not last until next (northern) spring’s election. The Communists and Socialists, grouped together as the People’s Democratic League, voted in Parliament against proposals for a 19 per cent rise in defence spending, despite a warning from Mr Sorsa that he would not tolerate such opposition within the Government. Mr Sorsa’s Government of

Social Democrats, Centrists and Swedish Party representatives would command a narrow 103-97 majority in the single-chamber Parliament even without the Communists arid Socialists.
