More than 600 named in honours list

NZPA-Reuter London Entertainers, politicians, athletes and businessmen are among over 600 people rewarded today in_„the Queen’s list of New Year’s Honours in the United King-, dom. They include the actor, Michael Hordern, the interior designer, Terence Conran, the author Gerald Durrell, the world decathlon champion, Daley Thontyson, the Queen’s jockey, Willie Carson, an Oscar-winning film director, David Puttnam, the outgoing governor of the Bank of England and the governor of Hong Kong. The list, largely drawn up on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, recognises individual achievement and public service in Britain and some Commonwealth countries. Top honours went to three knights already singled out in previous years, and to Gordon Richardson, due to end 10 years as governor of Britain’s central bank in June. He is made a baron, giving him a seat in the House of Lords. The three knights elevated to the upper house of Parliament are Sir Neil Cameron, Sir Derek Ezra and Sir Derek Rayner.

Sir Neil was . chief of Britain’s Defence Staff from 1977 until his retirement in 1979. He is now principal of King’s College, London.

Sir Derek Ezra, who ended a decade as head of the State-run National Coal Board in July, follows an old adversary, the miners leader, Joe Gormley, into the House of Lords. Lord Gormley was made a baron in the last

honours list in June after he retired. Sir Derek Rayner recently resumed his post as joint vice-chairman of the Marks and Spencer store chain after three years as Mrs Thatcher’s personal adviser on efficiency in Government.

Sir Edward Youde, posted to Hong Kong earlier this year as governor of Britian’s last colony in Asia, is made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michaeland St George.

Two Commonwealth Prime Ministers are honoured. Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara of Fiji is also made a Knight Grand Cross and Lynden O. Pindling, Prime Minister of the Bahamas, a Knight Commander of the same order.

Among 31 people made knights are the actor, Michael Hordern, the conductor, John Pritchard, a former

Health Minister, Kenneth Robinson, who recently retired as director of the Arts Council, and Terence Conran. Mr Conran put his stamp on interior design in the 1960 s with a range of modern and inexpensive furniture and furnishings sold through his own chain of shops called Habitat. Jonathan Miller, a doctor better known as a director of opera. and Shakespearean productions for television, is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Dr Miller, who first won critical acclaim for the 1960 s theatrical revue “Beyond the Fringe." recently decided to leave the stage and resume a career in medicine in the United States. David Puttnam. winner of a Hollywood Oscar for his film “Chariots of Fire,” is also made a C.B.E. New officers of the Order of the British Empire include the entertainer, Max Bygraves, the jockey Willie Carson, the zoologist and writer Gerald Durrell, the cricket broadcaster Brian Johnston, the novelist Noel Streatfield and baritone lan Wallace.

Sportsmen awarded the Order of the British Empire include, Duncan Goodhew, the 1980 Olympic gold medallist in the 100 metres breaststroke, and Daley Thompson the world record holder and Olympic and Commonwealth Games decathlon champion.

But the real veteran in the honours list is the actor Jack Howarth, aged 86, who gets an M.B.E. after 22 years in the role of Albert Tatlock, in the television soap opera “Coronation Street.”
