World Cup top sports story
NZPA New York Italy’s victory in the World Cup soccer tournament has been voted the top sports story of the year by editors around the world, surveyed by the Associated Press. Italy’s 3-1 triumph over West Germany in the championship game in Madrid outpolled Jimmy Connors’ comeback victory . at Wimbledon, and boxer Larry Holmes’ thirteenth successful defence of his world heavyweight title. The remainder of the top 10 in order:
4. Briton Daley Thompson’s world record in the decathlon. 5. The death of South Korean boxer Duk Koo Kim, after being knocked out in the ring. 6. The retirement of welterweight champion, Sugar Ray Leonard. 7. Martina Navratilova’s dominance of the women’s tennis tour.
8. The attack on a referee by the North Korean soccer team at the Asian Games in New Delhi. 9. The Asian Games. 10. East German Marita Koch’s world record in the women’s 400 metres.
The poll was taken among newspaper, news agency and broadcast editors in countries served by the Associated Press outside North America.
