Pfister, Lewis, through

NZPA Melbourne The top seed, Hank Pfister, of the United States, survived another three-set

battle before s scraping through to the quarter-finals of the $75,000 Victorian tennis open at Kooyong yesterday.

The tall, hard-serving Pfister recovered from an opening set deficit before overpowering England's Richard Lewis, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Lewis managed to save four match points before he finally fell to the American. The Englishman had added determination in yesterday’s match as he was battling for a place in the English Davis Cup squad. England faces Australia in a first round tie on grass in Adelaide in March.

The gauntlet was thrown down yesterday by Lewis’s countryman, John Lloyd; Lloyd defeated a talented

young Canberra player, Wally Masur, and made it clear later than he was keen

to cement a spot in the English team. The third-seeded New Zealander, Chris Lewis, used to full advantage bis renowned speed round the court to battle an American. Mike Leach, and win a spot in the quarter-finals. Lewis won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. He said later: “He’s' got a great serve and the way he started the first set I thought I would be lucky even to get a racquet to the ball.

“But the balls got heavier and I started getting some returns in and scraped through." Lewis said he was happy because the ankle injury which had interrupted his Australian tour showed no sign of returning.
