Rare plover hatched
PA Hamilton Three eggs of the rare shore plover have been successfully hatched at the Otorohanga Zoological Society's kiwi house. The eggs were from the 12 part incubated eggs flown from the Chatham Islands, where only 70 pairs of shore plover remain. All are on a
small south-eastern island in the Chathams group, and the Wildlife Service is trying to increase the numbers. The chicks may be taken to another island in the Chathams to start a new colony. The other nine eggs being hatched will finish their 30day incubation period in about a fortnight.
