Match of frustration

PA Wellington Rain shortly before 4.30 p.m. yesterday ended a day of incident in. Wellington’s Shell. Trophy cricket encounter with Northern Districts at the Basin Reserve.

Northern’s second innings crumbled alarmingly at 92 for six, the batsman, Andy Roberts, survived two confident appeals for caught behind and the burly Lance Cairns plastered the Wellington bowlers with 77 not out from 68 balls. Geoff Howarth then declared the Northern innings closed at 258 for seven leaving Wellington to make that many in 115 minutes plus 20 overs for victory. While Wellington resolved

at its early tea break that it would attempt the daunting task in a bid to give its hopes of retaining the trophy a swift boost, it was never on.
