Readers survey of the top 10 movies for 1982

Despite the Christmas lull, I am already starting to receive a gratifying reply from readers to our survey of the best films of the year that is just coming to an end. The main difficulty, of course, is trying to list your 10 favourite movies after 12 months have almost passed, making it virtually immpossible to remember them all — even the ones you thought you liked best at the time. Another challenge in this survey of cinema-going readers is that we are trying to make a list of the films which most captured the public’s imagination — not necessarily of the ones which were the biggest box office successes.

Therefore, I would like to receive letters from frequent and not-so-frequent cinemagoers for their favourite films of 1982.

This will help me compile a list of the top 10 films of the year to be published in “The Press” on January 6. Correspondents are invited to submit their personal lists of favourite films — their own top 10, top three, or any number — and a short explanation for the reason for

their choices would be appreciated.

Besides a list of the best films. I hope to include a selection of readers' replies. These will be chosen for their general interest, relevancy or a touch of the controversial. The writers of the letters published will receive a double pass ticket to a theatre of their choice early next year. This is not a competition but a general survey of reader-writers.

This year, I have decided not to give a short list of some of the best films of 1982 because it may influence the response.

One important thing which I must point out, however, is that time passes more quickly than we think, and such major movies as “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Chariots of Fire,” or "Arthur” can not be included because they belong to 1981. (One correspondent already has listed “For Your Eyes Only,” which is out for the same reason).
