Saloon car championship draws strong entry
The South Island championships for speedway saloon cars will be contested at Woodford Glen Speedway on Sunday evening and has drawn a strong entry. ' Preceding that meeting is the annual Bardahi 20-lap saloon car classic tomorrow evening. Heading the field will be the twice national champion and present South Island champion Peter Woods, from Gore. Woods, who also won
the last saloon car classic, will race a Holden Commodore V 8 this year. The biggest danger to Woods in his bid for another big title will come from resident drivers such as Tony Cardwell in his Radio Avon Pontiac Transam and Doug Smith in a 3ZM Latimer Motor Lodge Chevy Monza. Cardwell, the Canterbury champion, was the runner-up to Woods in the 1980 New Zealand title and at the
South Island championships last season. .Smith, a very experienced driver, has never won a major title. With just a little luck he could well win the championship on Sunday. Dave Sangster, a former Canterbury champion, now living in Dunedin, will also be a top contender with his Holden Monaro V 8 along with Ron Taylor, also of Dunedin, who will drive the latest Ford Mustang.
