A.C.T. ends day in command

PA Auckland The tempo increased at Eden Park yesterday as the Australian Capital Territory cricket side scored 265 for six wickets in 310 minutes to play itself into a sound position against the New Zealand under-22 team. After taking a 47-run first innings lead before declaring just three deliveries short of the new ball being available after 85 overs, the visitors ended the day in command. The under-22 side was 35 for one in its second innings at stumps. Trevor Franklin declared the local side’s first innings closed at their overnight score of 218 for eight yesterday morning. Hope of an early breakthrough after the start had again been delayed a few minutes, quickly turned to despair as the opener, Steven Marshall, was dropped by Rod Latham from the bowling of James Swift before he had scored. Marshall soon provided the foundation for the A.C.T. innings. After an opening partnership of 29 with Mark Thornton. Marshall added 49 in 68 minutes for the second with Bruce Willett and then 103 in 113 minutes for the third with Russell Rogers.

Marshall, perhaps not as aggressive as some of the other batsmen, played the anchor role in his 72. His 240minute stay proved invaluable and allowed Greg Irvine and, in particular, the lefthander. Neil Bulger, to hit out later in the innings. N.Z. Under-22 First innings 218 '8 dec. Second innings T. McKeown c Radcliffe b Hannam 11 T. Franklin not out 20 D.
