Dyson, Lawson may play against N.Z.

NZPA Sydney The New South Wales selectors want to include the test opener, John Dyson, and the. fast bowler, Geoff Lawson, in-the line-up to meet New Zealand under lights at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday. Dyson is anxious to play, although only a day separates the end of the third test in Adelaide and the daynight game against the New Zealanders. But the effort may be too much for the lion-hearted Lawson, who has had to give two back-to-back fast bowling efforts, with Australia enforcing the follow-on against England. The Thursday day-night game for New’ Zealand is only a warm-up on the S.C.G. for the one-day inter-

nationals against Australia and England in the New Year. The N.S.W. chairman, Dick Guy, and his co-selectors, with the captain, Rick McCosker, meet this afternoon to select the team. Dirk Wellham, who last week blazed 162 with 29 fours for his Western Suburbs grade club, must be under consideration by the national selectors for the fourth test in Melbourne, starting on December 26, after the failure by Allan Border in the middle-order in Adelaide. A newcomer, Graham Spring, aged 21, made a big impression with the new ball against South Australia, both in the Sheffield Shield clash and the McDonald’s Cup fixture.

The one-day international side will have to be built round a balanced bowling attack of Spring, Len Pascoe, Mike Whitney, Trevor Chappell and one of Gary Bensley, or the off-spinner and lefthand batsman, Greg Matthews. If Dyson plays, and Lawson pleads fatigue, the squad could be Rick McCosker (captain), John Dyson, Trevor. Chappell, Dirk Wellham, Steve Smith, Peter Toohey, Steve Rixon, Greg Matthews, Graham Spring, Gary Bensley, Len Pascoe, Mike Whitney. But the recalled former opener, lan Davis, will be on standby for Dyson, and with his century followed by a 40 in two district club' rounds, will be hard to discard from the squad.
