England in desperate struggle

NZPA Adelaide England, losing its last seven wickets for 35 runs, was struggling to save the third cricket test against Australia yesterday. Chasing Australia's first innings score of 438, England managed only 216 and was forced to bat again by Australia’s captain. Greg Chappell. At the close on the third day England was 90 for one in its second innings, still 132 runs short of Australia's total. The fast bowlers. Geoff Lawson and Jeff Thomson, spearheaded the attack on a perfect batting wicket and each took two wickets in an over. When England began their second innings after tea, it was stunned again when Chris Tavare fell without scoring with the total on 11, but the other opener. Graeme Fowler, undefeated on 37, and David Gower, on 43, survived to the dose. In England's first innings. Lawson finished with figures of four for 56 runs, and Thomson three for 51. England, already 0-1 down in the five-test series, gave a disastrous batting display on a wicket that, as Australia proved, was full of runs. It resumed its innings on 66 for two wickets, having lost the openers, Tavare (I) and Fowler (11), in Saturday's final session. Gower and Allan Lamb pushed the score along to the lunch total with a stand of 119, but England’s troubles began immediately after the break. AUSTRALIA First innings K.
